Tips for working with recruiters to help you get the best results

Recruiters connect you with employers and roles that align with your abilities, interests and values. They can be a strong ally on your journey toward landing a new job. Building an open, respectful working relationship with your recruiter can help you secure your next opportunity sooner.

In this article, we’ll share a few simple, practical tips to help recruiters help you throughout the hiring process.

  1. Update your resume and prepare in advance:
Having a current, up-to-date resume allows recruiters to jump-start the selection process. Make sure your resume clearly outlines all relevant information required for the role(s) you’re interested in.

It’s also important to prepare answers to commonly asked interview questions, including those related to your values, achievements, work preferences, strengths and weaknesses, and salary expectations. Being honest and accurate helps recruiters match you with opportunities where you’re likely to thrive and add value to the employer.

  2. Work with recruiters you trust:
Just as a recruiter asks questions to determine whether you’re the right fit for a role, you should also ask questions to decide whether they’re the right person to represent you. Work with a recruiter who follows ethical practices, communicates openly, and never shares your resume without your consent. A good recruiter will treat you as a person – not a product – and will genuinely advocate for your interests throughout the hiring process.

  3. Respond to emails and texts promptly:
Responding quickly to messages from recruiters demonstrates professionalism, eagerness and accountability in your job search. It can also help you take advantage of time-sensitive opportunities.

Avoid ghosting your recruiter – doing so could mean missing out on a great role, offering your dream role to another candidate. If you are unable to return a call straight away, send a quick message to let them know when you’ll be available to talk, ideally within a couple of hours.

  4. Communicate openly:
Be transparent about other roles you’ve applied for, and whether you’re working with multiple recruiters. Let your recruiter know what stage you’re at in other selection processes. Most recruiters understand that job seekers often use multiple channels and will appreciate your honesty.

Avoid burning bridges with one recruiter simply because another opportunity looks promising. Circumstances can change quickly, and maintaining positive, professional relationships can open doors in the future.

  5. Stay in touch:
Connect with your recruiter on LinkedIn and make an effort to stay in touch. You never know when an exciting, new opportunity might arise that’s a great fit for your skills and goals.
